Yes, you did read that correctly. I started working with websites in the late 90’s back when I was around 13 years old. I did some design work a few of my dad’s friends and co-workers at the local University where he was a director. Those were the days when Photoshop 4 was cutting edge, and being able to do anything at all with Flash was a big deal.
A lot has changed since then, and I am now a partner at DesignVitality, a web design firm here in southern California. Over the years I have worked with, and grown to love a lot of social media sites and social networks including FaceBook, Digg, Reddit and Stumbleupon. My latest craze has been with Twitter, and I have to say that this feels different then all the other times I was really into a website. Read the full post…
Fake Social Network Profiles: A New Identity Theft Threat This Year
Posted by Mustafa | Add a Comment
There is a new form of identity theft emerging in 2009. People who do not have profiles at social network sites could have their online identities stolen. An annual threat report by Aladdin, an online security firm, indicates that if you do not have profiles at certain social networks you could be at risk. Someone else could easily aggregate information about you from other places online and create a fake, yet believable social profile and use it to ruin your social or professional reputation online.
In a test conducted by the team at Aladdin, researchers were able to create fake profiles that were so believable that they were able to connect with those people’s real friends and acquaintances. Read the full post…

MrBabyMan: Not Only the King of Digg, but All Social Media?

Chances are that if you spent a few minutes browsing Digg, you would probably read a story submitted by Andrew Sorcini, aka MrBabyMan. He has submitted over 12,200 stories and dugg over 128,000 stories. 28% of his submissions have went popular, being featured on the Digg front page.
Digg can get about 20,000 submissions in one day, yet only about 200 stories a day actually make the front page. The vast majority usually don’t get enough Diggs to make the cut, usually because they are submitted by users with little to no following at all.
Farhad Manjoo recently wrote an article about MrBabyMan, and his immense influence on Digg.com and other social media sites. Sorcini is the #1 ranked user on Digg. He also participates in the Drilldown podcast, which frequently covers the topic of social media. Read the full post…
RWW: 10 Ways Social Media Will Change in 2009

Ravit Lichtenberg wrote a great article discussing the ways that social media is expected to change this year. The article discusses how social media is evolving, and how there are now hundreds of piggy back applications and tools built around the multitude of existing social networks.
1. Its All About People
We’re moving away from “users,” “customers,” and “shoppers”: social media is bringing back the human element to all digital interaction. People now deliberately seek meaningful connection, self-expression, and a relevant and receptive community. Forrester’s Social Technographic research and Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff’s Groundswell represent a huge step towards a new kind of behavior-driven segmentation, but companies that want to succeed will need to take it further and tap into people’s evolving needs, using the social media context as the new baseline.
The “25 Things About Me” Meme is a Viral Success for FaceBook

The “25 Things About Me” meme has been a huge success for FaceBook. 25 Things About Me is basically a chain letter which makes use of FaceBook Notes and tagging. The way it works is pretty simple. Someone writes 25 things about themselves and and then they tag you and 24 other friends. You then write 20-25 things about yourself and tag 25 of your friends. See the screenshot below:

The chain letter (ie, Social) aspect of this is the biggest reason why this has spread so fast. This is definitely chain mail 2.0, and it has contributed to countless new signups for FaceBook.
According to InsideFaceBook.com:
- The number of total Facebook Notes created per day has increased over 100% in the last week
- The number of people tagged in Facebook Notes per day has increased 5x in the last week
